CURRICULUM
From the moment you walk into The Harvey Academy, the joyful energy is unmistakable.
The Harvey Academy offers the following programs in grades 3-6 which offer students a multi-sensory approach to learning and are appropriate for all ability levels:
-
Framing Your Thoughts is a systematic and sequential writing curriculum that teaches sentence structure and writing from basic to complex using graphic symbols and hand motions to represent the parts of speech. This program makes abstract concepts concrete and emphasizes vocabulary development.
-
Paragraphology® is a paragraph writing program developed by a teacher at The Jemicy School in Baltimore, MD that uses a color-coded, comprehensive, scaffolded approach to writing where students are systematically taught a formula that guides them through the process of writing a basic five sentence paragraph to more detailed ones.
-
Handwriting Without Tears (grade 3) is a handwriting curriculum which offers a fun and systematic approach to teaching and learning handwriting. It keeps students engaged and offers guided practice to promote handwriting automaticity.
-
Each classroom will soon be equipped with an Expanding Expression Tool, (EET) developed by a speech pathologist to aid students in organizing their thoughts for speaking and writing. The EET provides a visual and tactile way to aid students in improved language organization and vocabulary development.
In addition, Grades 3-5 grade students enjoy weekly activities and participate in music, science experiments, PE, yoga, and art.
Students in grades 6-12 participate in daily electives including musical theater, art, newspaper, personal fitness, home economics, crafting, computer coding, and Spanish.
For lunch, students may bring a lunch from home, or there are a variety of lunch options students can choose from that are delivered to the school daily. Lunches are ordered locally from Tequesta Table, Bellini's Eatery, Domino's Pizza, Dune Dog Cafe, Baldino's Italian Restaurant and more.
Recess for all students is a daily occurrence where students play touch football, wiffle ball, soccer, or simply take a stroll around Paradise Park.
The school year is a perfect balance of work and rest. Nancy and her staff teach for nine weeks followed by a 2 or 3 week break, depending on the time of year.
